Install Balance on Hurd Energy Saver Double Hung Windows from 08/16/2010 to Present

As of August 6, 2014- Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI) purchase of Hurd and Superseal Windows and Doors. As of 8/2/2016 the Energy Saver line is still the same Hurd Energy Saver line but is now called Wisconsin Energy Saver Product.

1. Open bottom sash, tilt in and to the side to remove

2. Open top sash, tilt in and to the side to remove.
3. Remove screen.
4. Starting with the bottom cover, CAREFULLY remove the metal
cover by inserting a putty knife screwdriver at the end of the
cover, gently pry up and remove. Repeat steps with wood
jamb liner above PHOTO 2 & 3

gently pry up and remove. Repeat steps with wood
jamb liner above PHOTO 2 & 3

5. Move to the bottom of the jambliner, squeeze the liner to release it from the jamb, PHOTO 4, 5, 6 & 7.

6. Unlock the balance by inserting a flat head screwdriver tip into the balance shoe. The balance is under tension so hold onto the lock until it disengages. PHOTO 8 A & B

7. Slide old balance out and insert new balance. Make sure it hooks on the top of the liner. PHOTO 9

8. Install new jambliners. Starting at the top of the jamb, slide the liner into the space at head as shown in PHOTO 10. Make sure the liner fits snugly up against the head of the frame.

9. Using a flat blade putty knife, place the blade on top of the sill gasket and slide the bottom of the jambliner into place PHOTO 11 & 12. Making sure the jambliner is fit tightly along the full length of the side jamb.

9. Starting with the bottom cover, place at the bottom of the jambliner and seat the cover firmly into place PHOTO 13 & 14 .

10. Re-install the wood jambliner covers.
Starting at the top PHOTO 15, slide the cover up into the space at the head of the frame and seat the
cover into place along the jambliner.

Make sure the dust block is to the outside of the liner as shown in PHOTO 16.

11. Prepare balance for the sash installation. Insert a
flat head screwdriver tip into the balance shoe,
PHOTO 17, sliding shoe downward stopping 12″
from the sill. Lock the balance shoe in place making
sure the lock shoe hub is in the open position.

11. Prepare balance for the sash installation. Insert a
flat head screwdriver tip into the balance shoe,
PHOTO 17, sliding shoe downward stopping 12″
from the sill. Lock the balance shoe in place making
sure the lock shoe hub is in the open position.

12. Locate top sash, which includes latch pins
on top rail. With clad side up and sash pins
furthest away, hold the sash horizontally,
tiliting sideways to a 30° angle allowing the
pins to pass to the outer track. Insert one
pin into the locked balance shoe, PHOTO 18.
Lower the sash to a full horizontal position
inserting the opposite side pin into the
balance shoe.
Depress tilt pins and push sash to a full
vertical position, advancing sash to the outer
tracks. Release tilt pins.
Repeat for the bottom sash inserting sash pins
into the inner tracks.

12. Locate top sash, which includes latch pins
on top rail. With clad side up and sash pins
furthest away, hold the sash horizontally,
tiliting sideways to a 30° angle allowing the
pins to pass to the outer track. Insert one
pin into the locked balance shoe, PHOTO 18.
Lower the sash to a full horizontal position
inserting the opposite side pin into the
balance shoe.
Depress tilt pins and push sash to a full
vertical position, advancing sash to the outer
tracks. Release tilt pins.
Repeat for the bottom sash inserting sash pins
into the inner tracks.

13. Check operation & locking functions
Depress tilt pins and push sash to a full vertical
position, PHOTO 19, advancing sash to the outer
tracks. Release tilt pins.Repeat for bottom sash inserting
sash pins into the inner tracks.
